Short Bio:

Mother & The Boards is a fierce blend of folk and blues with a message to incite and inspire you. Defined by the vocal gymnastics and songwriting prowess of front woman Kazoo Studios, their sound is reminiscent of hip hop artists like Erykah Badu and Brother Ali but come from the lips of a New York State folk singer. Imagine the musical birth child of Nina Simone, Bob Dylan and Fugazi belting revolutionary anthems for a contemporary audience. Mother & The Boards  uses a looping pedal, guitar and vocals to craft a unique blues and folk sound with distinct hip hop influences. Mother & The Boards also features regular guests on percussion, bass, horns and strings. Based in Oakland, CA, you can find them performing in venues across the Bay Area. Their latest music video, Superfund (released in August 2016) was included on Shadowproof Media’s Protest Song of the Week.

Long Bio:

Mother & The Boards is the latest project from guitarist, vocalist and front woman Kazoo Studios. Kazoo began singing as a child in her church choir and later began composing professionally for short films before finding her way to the front of the stage. Kazoo is not your average singer/songwriter. She weaves disciplines like some weave wool. Trained sculptor, artist, designer, journalist and filmmaker, she intertwines a multifaceted vision to bring her work to life putting her revolutionary message front and center. Kazoo’s lyricism recalls conscious hip hop artists like Brother Ali and Erykah Badu, but are spoken from the mouth of a New York State folk singer. Imagine the musical birth child of Nina Simone, Bob Dylan and Fugazi belting revolutionary anthems for a contemporary audience. Mother & the Boards uses their fierce blend of folk and blues to support movements for a sustainable planet, racial justice and resilient community.

Using a double looping pedal to build beats from guitar and vocals, Mother & The Boards crafts a unique blues and folk sound with distinct hip hop influences. Mother & The Boards also features regular guests on percussion, horns, bass and strings. You can find them performing in venues across the Bay Area, California. View their latest 2018 music video Mafia that was done in collaboration with Liberated Lens Collective. Their music video, Superfund (released in August 2016) was included on Shadowproof Media’s Protest Song of the Week.
